Show & Tell: Food Writing
I found the below article on Figs in the September 2012 issue of Shape Magazine. This is a good example of food writing and design. The title of the article, Figs, is located in the upper left quadrant of the page that, according to a resource guide I received many years ago at a seminar, carries more optical weight than any other location on the page. The article captures the reader's attention visually with the vibrant colors of figs that cascade down the page, drawing the readers eyes to the body copy. The article keeps the reader's attention by presenting a familiar image--Fig Newtons. Now the reader is hooked and can continue on to see what one can do with real figs, not cookies. Additionally important, the author presents the reader with actions to take--Select, Store, Prep, and Serve. While these are instructions on how to properly care for figs, they are reminiscent of marketing call to action which helps guide a customer to purchase.

Hi Stephanie! Thanks for your kind words about my blog!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, yes, I created my header in Illustrator. It's not actually a background image, but more of a banner. What appears to be the blog description is actually text I set up in banner. Basically, I removed the description and just created my own, using my own font, right in Illustrator.
You can modify the code to change just the blog description, though. A quick Google search might help you out.
Also, I can totally see your favicon! It looks great! It's appearing in both the link on my blog and when I visit your site.
Love your article choice. Shape Magazine is a good one, and I like their simplistic layout on this department piece.
See you in class!
Thanks, Emily. Would love to talk on Saturday about banner/backround file size requirements if you don't mind. See you then!
DeleteI think you have chosen a example. It really does capture your attention right from the beginning with the pictures. It continues to draw you in with the consistency of colors and the interesting beginning to the copy pulls you to keep reading.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you chose to share this because not only do I think it is a good show in tell in general but I think it is a perfect example of what our first project requires us to do. I was actually thinking of using a magazine such as Shape or another "healthy living" magazine; so thanks! Your post has been very beneficial for me :).
